In 2003, to celebrate the Bank’s 150th anniversary,
Standard Chartered, in collaboration with leading eye care agencies,
launched Seeing is Believing, with the aim of restoring the sight
of 28,000 people across the world. This represented a sight restoration
for every member of staff at that time. This staff led initiative
was hugely successful and doubled its target, inspiring a new challenge
to contribute towards one million sight restorations.
Seeing is Believing has reached its fundraising target of USD 6 million
a year ahead of schedule and will deliver one million sight restorations
by the target date of World Sight Day 2007.
Inspired by our fantastic achievements so far, we are ready for our
next challenge. After extensive consultation with the World Health
Organisation and leading eye health care organisations, we are proud
to announce our most ambitious plan to date. The next phase of Seeing
is Believing will help 10 million people across 20 countries focusing
on prevention and education as well as sight restoration. The

We will continue to help people with cataracts as well as broadening
our approach to help tackle other causes of preventable blindness
including glaucoma, trachoma and river blindness. As well as helping
to cure avoidable blindness, the project will engage with projects
aimed at preventing vulnerable people from losing their sight through
education and community based projects.
We will also look to increase our support to children, helping them
access education and other opportunities, providing them with a chance
to reach their potential and support themselves and their families.
The funds raised through the programme will go towards necessary
operations, medical equipment, education, training and awareness to
have a direct and positive impact on the lives of 10 million people.
Seeing is Believing has the ability to change millions of people’s
lives across the world. With your help, we can carry out our aim and
help not only those directly affected by blindness but those within
their families, communities and even countries.
